oh so refreshing

June 28, 2011

now that the weather has FINALLY broken and we are officially in summer in teton valley, it is time for some serious refreshment. jeff and i have been working like mad to get new garden beds in, vegetable seeds planted and new grass covering the lawn. after a few long hard hours of pick axing weeds and breaking up soil, a glass of water just doesn’t cut it. we are not soda people in this house. i grew up as a diet coke addict, but dropped the habit sometime after college in lieu of hydration.  i decided to do a little experimenting with what we had on had and came up with this simple and delightful concoction. it shall be deemed a tetonia spritzer. i make this with ice that i crush with our fabulous 1960’s avocado green hand crank ice crusher, but regular ice cubes will do. if you ever come upon one of the sears’ models or an ice-o-mat version, i highly recommend picking it up. you will feel very don or betty draper as you sip your summer refreshments.

Tetonia Spritzer

  • crushed ice
  • simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • slices of lemon, lime and orange
  • club soda
place ice in a tall glass, add 1/2-1 tsp simple syrup, squeeze lemon, lime and orange into glass, fill with club soda. sit back and feel like a high roller.
Simple Syrup
  • sugar
  • water
place equal amounts of sugar and water in a small saucepan. bring to a simmer and cook until all sugar is dissolved. remove from heat  and allow to cool to room temperature. place in a sealable jar and store in the refrigerator.
  • variations: use turbinato sugar (sugar in the raw) for a richer flavor, after you remove from heat, add mint or citrus zest for flavoring.
